SUMMARY:Kenneth Paterson: Cryptography in the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Paterson will discuss a research theme that has emerged in the last few years\, namely the analysis of deployed cryptographic systems. In this line of work\, we either try to find vulnerabilities in the system (and disclose them to the affected vendors) or prove the security of the cryptographic core of the system. He will reflect on how they conduct this kind of research\, why they do it\, and what we can learn from it about how developers use (and abuse) cryptography. \n\n\n\nKenny Paterson is a Professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich\, where he leads the Applied Cryptography Group and is currently the head of the Department of Computer Science. Prior to joining ETH in 2019\, Kenny was with Hewlett-Packard Laboratories (1996-2001) and then at Royal Holloway University of London (2001-2019). Kenny was Program Chair for Eurocrypt 2011 and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cryptology from 2017 to 2020. He co-founded the Real World Cryptography series of conferences. His research has won best paper awards at conferences including ACM CCS 2016 and 2022\, IEEE S&P 2022 and 2023\, NDSS 2012\, CHES 2018\, and IMC 2018. He was made a Fellow of the IACR in 2017. In 2022\, he was the winner of the “Golden Owl” best teaching award for the Department of Computer Science at ETH. \n\n\n\nAs always: Help stop Food Waste and register until 19. November 2023!
